For those who would like more attention than they get from merely driving around in an i8 future-mobile.
BTU - are you sticking with OEM?

The wheels are sex, and I'd consider the color for a purely fun/track car, but I just couldn't for a daily.

Okay... NOW I get it! The black/blue paint scheme really makes the car. The usual white/silver makes it look like a fancy Dell desktop on wheels...

But it fits the accent color! IMO I'd like to see a blue i8 with the wheels and accents painted white. Then it'd be 11/10 though, too perfect to handle.

I hate cars that aren't mounted with the smallest possible diameter wheels.
Weight savings, plus they almost always look better.

I like a 30/70 proportion, 20/80 max.

I like the idea, but there is too much wheel and not enough rubber. Make the wheels 2-3" smaller and it would be perfect. The colors are TEH SEX though.

18-19 inches seems to be the sweet spot, or maybe just the maximum size when it comes to peak performance. Most people with my car go with 18s for the track, but some do go down to 17s (start to run into issues clearly brake calipers, I think). The one pictured above are clearly for show, not go.

You have an E9X M3, correct? If they clear the brake calipers, that's what I'd do. I wonder if it affects cooling in any way. Have people retrofitted brake ducts to M3s?

Did a super quick, crap 'shop just because I love blue cars with white wheels.
Don't think I could of chosen worse wheels to try that on.

Yup. I have the OEM 19s (summer, with wider rubber) and OEM 18s (winter). Even though the 19s are forged, I can still clearly feel the reduced rotational mass when I put the winters on.

And yes, some have fitted brake ducts for the track, but it doesn't seem that common.

Interesting. Is brake overheating ever an issue for you on track? I assume not after a fluid/pad upgrade.

I've never had an issue, but I'm not the fastest guy out there, either. For most, better fluid and pads are sufficient (I use StopTech Street Performance as a dual-use pad). The stock rotors are quite good actually, but some upgrade to larger StopTechs, Brembos, etc.

Yeah, I really don't like how big wheels have gotten. I think those would look really good in 18 or 19" wheels and there would actually be enough sidewall on the tires so you wouldn't bend the rim if you run over a peanut.

I don't know if I could do white wheels. Brake dust drives me nuts on my car, and my wheels are red.

I'm keeping mine OEM for now. Those wheels would look a lot better (IMO) in a matching grey to the car with blue highlights on either the spine of the spokes or the lip of the rim. It looks like a clown car with those rims. I get what they were trying to do, matching the blue highlights of the car, but those work because the rest of the car is a contrasting color.
Also, any modification I consider needs to mesh with a car's design intent/goals. In the case of the i8, it's a balance of sports car and eco car and while it's not the best at either, it's an AMAZING combination of the two. Depending of the mode you're in, it really feels like three different cars. Putting 22's, stickier rubber, lower springs, etc. may make it better in one area (that's debatable) at the expense of the others.
The i8 in the hands of your typical high end owner/tuner is like designing the most well-rounded utility knife in the world and giving it to someone who just wants to cut aluminum cans for fun. Every detail has been carefully considered and chosen. It's a engineering work of art...and people are tripping over themselves to ruin it and completely miss the point.

Exactly. Very frustrating to see a car's inherent goodness lessened by modifications.
I've always been an OEM+ kind of guy. Love the idea of taking a car to the point that the engineers and designers would like to have sent it to market, if not constrained by cost-cutting or governmental regulatory agencies.
